Saves and progress
- Where is my progress kept? In one file on your machine,
rewritten whenever something changes — a purchase, a run ending, a
setting:
- Windows —
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\missroot\I Only Moved My Mouse\save.json - macOS —
~/Library/Application Support/missroot/I Only Moved My Mouse/save.json - Linux —
~/.config/unity3d/missroot/I Only Moved My Mouse/save.json
- Windows —
- My progress is gone. If the file could not be read,
the game starts fresh and says why in the log (a line beginning
save: unreadable). It does not rename the old file — the next time anything is saved it will be written over. So before you buy or play anything, copysave.jsonsomewhere safe and send it to us; we will tell you what is recoverable. - Can I move my save to another machine? Copy
save.jsoninto the same folder there. The game has no cloud sync of its own; if Steam Cloud is on for it, Steam carries the file between your machines for you. - Can I reset everything? Delete
save.jsonwith the game closed. If you only want to start the cycle over and keep what is permanent, that is what Ascend in the forge is for — it melts the sword, the bank and the forge down for embers and keeps the embers.
Offline earnings
- How is it worked out? While the game is closed the blade keeps cutting at 40% of the best shards-per-second pace you have ever actually reached in a run, for at most 8 hours. The report on launch shows what it earned; the next launch starts the clock again.
- It says I earned nothing. The pace only counts once a run has lasted at least 20 seconds and produced shards, so a brand-new record has no pace to pay from — play one real run first. An absence under a minute is not reported at all.
- It paid less than I expected. Payment is measured from your best run, not from what the forge could do now. A better run raises it. The cap is 8 hours whether you were away for nine or for a week.
- Clock changes. The span is read from your machine’s clock. If the clock moved backwards since the last save, nothing is paid; nothing is taken away either.
Controls
- The mouse. Your cursor is the blade. There is nothing to click in a run: move the mouse and the sword follows, cutting whatever its edge sweeps through. Rest it on an enemy and it keeps cutting.
- The blade moves on its own. That is auto-cut: after 1.1 seconds of a still mouse the blade drives itself toward the enemy nearest the core, at 60% damage, and hands control back the moment you move. Turn it off under Settings → Auto-cut if you would rather it waited.
- The cursor disappeared. The game hides the system cursor while its window is focused — the blade is the cursor. Alt-tab out and it comes back.
- Keyboard. Every page works without the mouse. Arrow keys and Tab move the focus, Enter or Space commits it, Esc backs out — and pauses a run. Each button’s small keycap is the key that presses it outright: on the title, R run, F forge, S settings, Q quit; in the forge, 1–7 buy a row, M cycles x1 / x10 / MAX, T tiers the sword up, A ascends; on an awakening, 1 2 3 take a card; paused, S settings and A abandons the run.
- Rebinding and controllers are not supported yet.
Display, sound and comfort
- Settings — from the title or from pause — holds music and sound volume, screen shake and auto-cut. Arrow keys nudge a value or flip a toggle.
- If the shake is uncomfortable, that is the switch; the game stays playable with it off. There is no separate switch for the glow and hit flashes yet.
- Video. The game renders at a fixed pixel size and scales up to the window, so there are no resolution or fullscreen settings in-game — use your operating system’s window controls.
- Languages. English only for now.
Purchases and refunds
- In-game purchases. None. Everything the forge sells is bought with shards earned in play, and no build takes real money. The patch notes will say so on the day that changes.
- Refunds are handled by Valve, not by us, under the Steam Refund Policy. Ask through Steam Support and it goes to the same place a refund for any other game does.
Reporting a bug
Send the log with it — it is a plain text file, and it usually says in one line what took us an afternoon to guess:
- Windows —
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\missroot\I Only Moved My Mouse\Player.log - macOS —
~/Library/Logs/missroot/I Only Moved My Mouse/Player.log - Linux —
~/.config/unity3d/missroot/I Only Moved My Mouse/Player.log
If the game crashed, the log from the run that crashed is the one we need.
Launching again moves it aside to Player-prev.log in the same
folder and starts a fresh Player.log, so send us whichever of
the two covers the crash — and copy it before a second relaunch, which
drops it for good.
